Is it Ethical to Buy WoW Gold?
Blizzard says no. But they won’t punish you, per se, for buying WoW gold. They do not recommend you buy gold – it can be detrimental to the in-game economy. More importantly, however, is the unethical way some WoW gold is gotten.
By tracking player accounts that are or may be suspected of obtaining gold to sell it, Blizzard has discovered that the majority of gold gotten for sale to other players is by hacking other player’s accounts. Many services that offer power leveling of characters or rofession skilling up are allegedly hacking the same accounts months later and draining those accounts of gold and items (to be sold off for gold).
So while it appears Blizzard isn’t overly anxious about the fact that gold IS being bought and sold in the game, they are very aware of and concerned about player accounts being hacked for the purpose of obtaining gold. Personally, I had thought if you got caught buying gold you’d get your account banned. I haven’t seen that anywhere in Blizzards’ info pages – though I wouldn’t blatantly tell everyone I know that I do buy gold.
Buying WoW Gold – What Should I Know?
When you do plan to buy cheap Warcraft gold, it is important that you use a reputable service. I know of several that have been around for quite some time – and that makes them reliable and reputable. Other services, the kind you see spammed in-game, are probably not the ones you want to “try”. Go by word of mouth, or if you are reluctant to reveil that you want to buy gold, search the internet and look for reviews.
To keep your account safe, be mindful of the following:
1. Do not, ever, give your password to anyone you don’t know personally. Blizzard doesn’t even allow family shared accounts, there’s a good reason for this.
2. Don’t pay for powerleveling your character. If you really MUST have a high level asap, check out one of the many sites that sell WoW player accounts.
3. Do your homework and research the sites you may potential plan to buy from. Search for bad reviews, warnings or even paypal issues that may be pending (especially if there are a lot of complaints).
4. Keep in mind that a LOT of WoW gold will cost you. It takes time to gather the gold ethically, obviously. Selling the gold to just anyone for a few bucks isn’t a good business practice. If only the most serious buyers will pay higher fees, then it makes sense to target those particular buyers. Sure, a few thousand gold can be purchased for $30 USD or so, but if you are looking to buy 10’s of thousands of gold, then you are going to be paying hundreds of US dollars too.
Is Buying WoW Gold Cheating?
No, because you aren’t cheating by skipping quests, levels, or achievements that may be required to advance in the game. You may be able to afford things you otherwise wouldn’t, but no, buying WoW gold isn’t cheating. Though, some old-school gamers may think otherwise – the type of gamer who feels the need to play everything “as intended”. Which makes me chuckle when they whine about their class being nerfed or how their class is underpowered etc.
Even though Blizzard says that buying gold is detrimental to the in-game economy, I think it’s really not so much at all. If that were the case, I’d see wild fluctuations of auction house prices and/or the price of otherwise expensive items continually being driven down to much lower prices. That doesn’t happen. Why? Because the average person cannot or does not buy enough gold to effect the game in that way.
So DO go buy some gold to help you in the game. I do it and I know plenty of folks who do it on a regular basis – and have been for years. It IS safe, if you educate yourself and find a reputable service.
